Kries is a Croatian ethno/world music band formed in Zagreb in 2003 by frontman Mojmir Novaković, following his earlier work with the group Legen. The band is widely recognized for its unique fusion of traditional Croatian folk music with contemporary rock and world music influences.
Their music draws heavily on archaic melodies, lyrics, and instruments from various regions of Croatia, including Dalmatia, Istria, Slavonia, and Zagorje. These traditional elements—such as bagpipes, lijerica, flutes, and percussion—are combined with electric guitar, bass, and drums to create a distinctive modern sound rooted in heritage.
Kries are known for their energetic live performances and strong connection to Slavic mythology and ritual themes, which are reflected both in their music and the meaning of their name, derived from an old Croatian word referring to a bonfire or ceremonial fire.
The band has released several albums, including Ivo i Mara (2004), Kocijani (2008), Selo na okuke (2014), and Ivo i Mara II / Sunčana strana Mjeseca (2022), earning critical acclaim and international recognition within the world music scene.
With performances at major festivals across Europe and beyond, Kries have established themselves as one of the leading representatives of Croatian ethno music internationally, known for bridging tradition and contemporary expression in a powerful and authentic way.
